Doctors have been asked by a devastated mother to help her young child who has a three-inch “tail” that is still growing.
The growth protruding from seven-month-old Xiao Wei’s spine is the result of him being born with spina bifida, which means his vertebrae did not form properly, reports The Sun.
His mother Chen, from Guangdong province in China, said: "We have asked the surgeons to remove the tail but they tell us it is not that simple."
Surgeon Huang Chuanping said the “well developed” growth now measured some 10 centimetres.
“If we cut it off it will simply grow again. We need to repair the spinal canal first to stop it reoccurring,” he added.
The most common type of spina bifida is myelomeningocele, which affects 1 in 800 babies born.
